Last week, a group of enthusiastic students from Futures Institute had the unique opportunity to visit the prestigious Trinity College at Oxford University. The trip, filled with learning, exploration, and unforgettable experiences, was a highlight of the term for all who participated.

Upon arrival, students were greeted by knowledgeable tour guides who took them on an inspiring journey through the college’s centuries-old halls. Known for its rich academic history and beautiful architecture, Trinity and Jesus  Colleges are two of the most renowned institutions in Oxford. The students were particularly awed by the stunning surroundings, including the tranquil courtyards, historic chapel, and impressive library.

Student Reflections on the Trip

Many students shared their excitement and insights following the visit. Lucie, a Year 7 student, described the experience as “incredible,” reflecting on how inspiring it was to walk through the same halls as many brilliant minds before her. Dan, another student, was struck by the “sense of history” in the buildings, feeling as though he was walking alongside past scholars.

For many, the library was the highlight of the visit. Emma found it “amazing” to be surrounded by books that have shaped the world, while Ben appreciated the Q&A session with current Oxford students. He remarked that it gave him a better understanding of the admissions process and university life. Albie summed up the overall impact of the visit by saying it had “motivated him to work even harder and aim high” in his studies, dreaming of one day attending such a prestigious institution.

Students experiment during Trinity College Oxford trip

In addition to the tour of Trinity College, students took part in a series of interactive activities. Trenton enjoyed the STEM challenges, including a cyber security task where students investigated a simulated hacking case and an underwater cable project that required teamwork to develop a safe, efficient plan. “The activities were engaging and fun,” he shared, highlighting the view from the roof of Jesus College, which offered a stunning panoramic view of Oxford.

Noah, also enthusiastic about the trip, said, “I loved the interactive activities, like investigating cyber crime with Telefonica Tech. I also enjoyed walking around Jesus College, and it really inspired me to go there.” Dan echoed this excitement, particularly about the underwater activity where teams worked together to install an undersea cable while being mindful of the environment. “We had to be careful of the environment, especially the basking sharks!” he noted.

Problem solving at Trinity College

Izzy found the day particularly intriguing, with activities that challenged his problem-solving skills. “My favorite part was learning about the different workshops. I also loved the activity where we had to get the oil line across a mini pond without damaging the environment,” he said. Izzy also enjoyed meeting a professional hacker who explained his day-to-day work. “He set up a mystery where we had to figure out who was planning to steal £10 million from a vault. It was exciting to solve it!” he added.

Lucie, who worked as the environmental manager during the cable activity, shared her team’s efforts to create removable floats and plan a route for the cable that avoided obstacles like rocks and marine life. “We even relocated some rocks to protect the otters,” she said. Lucie also appreciated the chance to speak with professionals from various fields. “I visited every stall, asking questions and participating in activities like building miniature towns and completing quizzes.”

The visit to Trinity College Oxford was not only a chance to explore an iconic institution but also an opportunity for hands-on learning through engaging STEM activities. From investigating cyber crime to solving environmental challenges, the students left with new knowledge and a greater understanding of the world around them. As many students, like Noah and Izzy, were inspired to pursue further education at prestigious universities like Oxford, it’s clear that the trip sparked both curiosity and ambition.

We hope this experience will continue to inspire them as they move forward in their studies. Thank you to everyone who helped make this memorable trip possible!
